West Virginia Academic Coaches Association
Academic Competition Consultants

Would you like to have another way to promote academics in your school or school system? Here is an idea to bring the excitement of a game show to learning. My name is Shawn Weaver and I am the President of the West Virginia Academic Coaches Association (WVACA), which promotes quiz bowl competition in the state of West Virginia. A number of schools in the state play quiz bowl, and twenty-four schools played in the state championship tournament held March 31, 2006 at WVU-Parkersburg. Other schools have played Hi-Q in Huntington this spring, and Hurricane, Cabell Midland, Parkersburg Catholic, Tygarts Valley, Bridgeport, Ripley, and Riverside High Schools all hosted high school competitions. Other schools hosted competitions for middle schools.

A number of schools would like to participate, but face the hurdle of figuring out where to start. That is the reason I am writing you this letter. Academic Competition Consultants was created to provide services to help you start an academic team, and to host your own tournament.

The services ACC can provide you include training students and coaches, as well as training volunteers to work at your school’s, county’s, or RESA’s tournament. You will receive training from an experienced player, coach, and tournament director. I have run tournaments at Cameron High School, John Marshall High School, Salem International University, and Parkersburg Catholic High School.

The cost for this service is $250 for a day of training, plus expenses. Player/coach training can be accomplished in one day, while tournament preparation will require two days but include player/coach training. Expenses are arranged as a fixed cost, thirty cents per mile from my home in Vienna, WV, for travel, $50 per day for meals (discounts if one or more meals are provided), and overnight accommodations for trips of over one hundred miles one-way. Schools may wish to combine for training, or go through their RESA to host training.

Many states, including Georgia, South Carolina, and Missouri are very competitive in quiz bowl. Kentucky requires all high and middle schools to compete. They believe that promoting academic competition at the highest level encourages achievement. Would you like to see what it could do for your area? Contact me.
